How To Get Korean Family Registry
General Information
The U.S. Embassy in Seoul keeps no files of the different documents we issue, such as a Consular Report of Birth, or documents dealing with the death of an American in Korea. These records are instead filed in Washington, DC. We also do not go along whatsoever files of Korean civil documents, such every bit records of marriages and divorces in Korea. These records are held by the Korean government. Other records, such every bit nascence certificates for people born in the United States, are stored in the state of origin.

Study of the Death of an American Citizen
A report of death is a document issued past a U.Southward. Embassy or Consulate reflecting the facts of a death abroad of an American denizen. The document is based upon the local death certificate.

Certificate of Witness to Wedlock
A document issued by a U.S. Diplomatic mission or Consulate reflecting the facts of a marriage abroad in which at least one party is an American Citizen. A consular officer must have attended the ceremony. This service was discontinued in 1987. Please refer to the State Section website on how to obtain marriage certificates filed prior to November 9, 1989.
Documents that Must Be Obtained from the Korean Government
Many people have the misconception that they were married at the U.S. Diplomatic mission in Seoul. Our office may aid with paper work necessary for U.South. citizens to ally in Korea, and, in the past, authenticated spousal relationship certificates issued by various Korean ward offices and/or Seoul City Hall. However, Embassies do not perform marriages and our role does not maintain marriage records.
If your wedlock was registered before Jan 31, 1995 : a copy of a Korean marriage certificate may be obtained by writing to the Citizens Section, Seoul Urban center Hall. Please bank check with Seoul Urban center Hall for the most up-to-date information earlier you ship your request. (Note: Yous may be asked to send a copy of your ID, a return addressed envelope, and xxx dollars cash per document.)

If your matrimony was registered afterward Feb of 1995 ; you should have had a Written report and Certificate of Marriage certificate. A certified re-create of your Report and Certificate of Wedlock may exist obtained by writing to the specific ward office in which your marriage registration took place. The ward office nearest the U.South. Diplomatic mission in Seoul is the Jongro-gu Ward Office and the bulk of U.S. citizens in Korea registered their marriages at that place. Since 2011 : the local district offices began providing a Document of Marriage Registration (수리증명서, pronounced soo-ree jeung-myung-suh) which serves as the official Korean marriage document. A copy of this document can exist obtained by writing to the specific ward office in which your marriage registration took place. Please bank check with the advisable ward office for the about up-to-date data before you transport your request. (Note: You may be asked to send a copy of your ID, 200 won per document, and additional money for return stamp fee.)
If one spouse is a Korean citizen : the union is reflected on the Korean matrimony document (혼인관계증명서, pronounced strop-in-gwan-gae jeung-myung-suh). Marriage records are kept every bit function of family registry information and may be obtained through local ward offices.
